Your Indian passport establishes your identity in a foreign country. Hence it is important to have it re-issued before the date of expiry. The passport can be submitted for re-issue up to one year before the date of expiry.
Your Indian passport is a valuable document. It should always be either in your custody or in the custody of a person duly authorized by you. If lost or destroyed, the fact and circumstances should be immediately reported to the nearest Mission and the local police.
We suggest that you keep a photocopy of your Indian passport in a safe place, separate from the passport. The photocopy should include the pages showing the personal particulars, the validity of the passport, date/place of issue, also the stamp of departure from India, entry in the USA, and the visa issued by the US / Foreign authorities.
All minors are required to have a separate passport. The old practice of including a child’s name in the Passport of either of the parents has been discontinued.
On acquiring US/Foreign nationality, the Indian Passport should be submitted to the nearest SE Indian Consular Application Centre for cancellation as per the Consular Jurisdiction. It is returned to the holder after cancellation. The use of an Indian passport for travel to India after acquiring any foreign nationality is an offense and invites penalty. After acquiring US/Foreign citizenship, you do not remain an Indian citizen and need an Indian visa to travel to India.

Lost passport renewal

If you have lost or misplaced your passport within India, you need to first file a
report at the nearest police station stating that you have lost or misplaced
the passport. While traveling abroad and somehow you have lost or misplaced
your passport, immediately file a complaint to nearest police station abroad
and to the Indian embassy.

In case of a stolen passport and if you are aware who stole it, an FIR to be lodged against the person who has stolen your passport. In case you are not certain about who has stolen the passport, you have to lodge an FIR against an unidentified person or persons.

Passport application for Minor

Passport application for minor or passport renewal for minor can be availed from our dedicated passport consultants. An applicant who is below 18 years of age is considered as minor with regard to issuance of passport. Both parents/ legal guardians give consent to minors to apply for a passport. Minors can apply only for 36 pages passport and are not eligible to apply for 60 pages of passport. Minor passport is valid for five years or till he attains 18 years of age whichever is earlier in terms of validity. In case, a minor who is aged between 15 years and 18 years, is eligible to apply for a passport which is valid for 10 years. However, passport fee for 10 years valid passport is more compared to the passport which is valid till the minor becomes 18 years of age. Also, a 10 year valid passport issued to a minor is always subject to police verification clearance.

What is a damaged passport?

A passport can be considered as damaged in the following conditions:

Residual stains on passport due to close contact to water, oil, paint etc.
Scribbling by pen on any of the passport pages
Lamination worn out in the passport first or last page
Torn pages, missing pages or wearing out near binding threads

Based on the extent of damage, passport can be applied under normal or tatkaal mode:

If the passport number is readable, the name is legible and the photo is intact people are eligible to apply under normal or tatkaal scheme
If the passport is damaged beyond recognition, one can apply only under normal mode
